What is MCT Oil?
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides. The fats that make up MCT oil are present in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and dairy products. By classifying these fats by the number of carbon atoms they have, we can categorize them as short chain (<6 carbon atoms), medium chain (6-10 carbon atoms) and long-chain (>10 carbon atoms).
Why is medium better than long? MCTs are digested more rapidly, and are considered a source of clean fuel for the body and brain. That means they will give your body the energy it needs without filling it with a bunch of stuff it doesn't — such as added sugar and processed ingredients. Long chains take longer to metabolize and get stored as fat in the process. That is why a specialized formula isolating MCT’s only is more efficient that just using coconut or palm kernel oil.
You've probably been trained to fear saturated fat, but researchers and fitness enthusiasts alike suggest that not all saturated fats deserve a bad rep — and that includes the fat found in pure MCT oil. The idea is that by consuming this quick-digesting fat, the body rapidly absorbs and metabolizes it for fuel, while more of the slow-burning longer-chain fats like olive oil, butter, beef fat, palm oil, and coconut oil get stored.
Additionally, the body can convert MCTs into ketones, which are substances created by the liver when it breaks down fat. The body can use ketones as a source of energy for the brain in place of sugar or glucose.
